WELCOME
Is there a community in Chicago with a wider variety of personalities than the
University Village/Little Italy neighborhood? From professionals who work
downtown or at one of the nearby medical centers to people whose families
have been in this community for generations, we are a diverse, exciting
community just a ten or fifteen minute walk from downtown Chicago.
The University Village Association welcomes you to this historic community.
At the heart of the neighborhood are the rich Italian-American traditions of the
Taylor Street area, affectionately known as Chicago's Little Italy. Next door
are two world class facilities. One is the University of Illinois at Chicago with
its exciting urban campus, which includes the undergraduate and graduate
schools, its world-class hospital, medical, dental and nursing colleges, and
research institutes among other specialties. The area is also home to Rush
University Medical Center, one of the country's foremost tertiary care medical
centers and related colleges of medicine, nursing and graduate programs in
health science management. The Illinois Medical District borders the
community's western edge and is the largest medical district in the country with
its several hospitals, clinics, schools and other health-care related and technology
centers. (Along with UIC Medical Center, Rush University Medical Center, the
Illinois Medical District is also comprised of the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, the
Jesse Brown Veteran's Administration Hospital, and several research institutes).
Combine these premier institutions of learning and health care with historic
century old row houses, some of the best public and private elementary and high
schools in the State of Illinois, successful new townhome and condominium
developments, then toss in blocks and blocks of quintessential Chicago-style two
flats and three flats and last, but not least, add a strong, committed group of
residents and merchants from every part of the community who are dedicated to
bettering their neighborhood and the result is one of the most stable and
heterogeneous communities in Chicago.
